A troubled person needs encouragement. Be prepared to speak every supportive word in the dictionary to boost someone’s mood. Absolutely do not criticize, (“Well, this is your fault because…”) especially if it’s true: the person already knows it. No “piling on” today, be kind. Antoine de Saint-Exupery said, “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” When the situation changes, you’ll have a friend for life.
