A Prayer For Everyone: Prayer To Be Reborn In Dewachen Video

Jetsunma Ahkön Lhamo composed the following song to offer blessings and comfort to all who are sick or facing death, animals as well as humans, all beings. This video has been created so the prayer can be easily shared.

“If you want to give something for Christmas, give them this music. Even if they’re not dying. But especially if they are close to the end. It’s free. Nothing to worry about. No one is taking you for a ride. It’s just love.”

The video features the prayer followed by a short teaching from Jetsunma on how it can be used.

The Prayer To Be Reborn In Dewachen is a traditional Buddhist prayer to prepare for the time of death.

What is Dewachen?

Buddha Amitaba - Dewachen

From The Spiritual Path:  A Compilation of Teachings by Jetsunma Ahkon Lhamo

When you pray to be reborn in Dewachen, what do you really mean? In the ultimate view, Dewachen is the celestial mandala of the Lord Amitabha. Lord Amitabha is a Dharmakaya Buddha. Thus Dewachen is Dharmakaya awareness or the Dharmakaya view—the pure, uncontrived, primordial-wisdom view, free of all conceptualization. To be reborn in Dewachen really means to experience the natural Dharmakaya state—the state that has no limitation. Dharmakaya has no consideration of self and other, no separation between form and formless. To awaken in that state is not to become a transformed or translucent ego. Please understand that if you want to become a better person, you want, somehow, to become transformed. You want to be a Buddha. Then people will say, “Look, there’s a Buddha!” Can you see the difference between that attitude and the experience of pure nature, suchness, free of all idea of ego?

Do you still practice with an idea about what you will be? That very you consists of and maintains incorrect view. When you pray to be reborn in Dewachen—make no mistake about it—you are praying for the death of your ego. Eternal life implies the belief in self-nature as an eternal reality. Someone who believes in eternal life, consciously or unconsciously, is on a path without the understanding that if ego did survive forever, it would only insure the continuation of suffering. Such a path is not workable. If your secret prayer is somehow to become a transformed ego, if you are using Dharma words to disguise your wish to remain intact as a self, then you are asking to continue on the wheel of cyclic death and rebirth, the wheel of suffering, the wheel of samsara.

The Life, Death, and Liberation of Ani Palchen

Ani-Palchen21-249x300

Thank you one and all for having prayer and recitation with us. While we are grieving dear Ani’s loss, the comfort of your presence is strong.

We are greatly sorry to lose her. But hers was a noble life, with merit, Bodhicitta and unbroken Samaya. We honor her.

Venerable Ani Palchen was a woman of faith and virtue. She never had a mean word to say. She made people feel welcome and loved.

I loved her. We all did. Do. While our hearts are heavy we rejoice that her Sangha, her Lineage, her family, and her Guru were there.

Not all will die a noble, auspicious death free of suffering. Not all will instantly be reborn in Dewachen. Not all are so loved.

She will be cremated in full robes, adorned with incense and flowers. The pure smoke will please the Buddhas, as did she.

Many have failed their ordination. Have lost their path. Not Venerable Ani, who honored Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha as well as her Tsawei Lama.

Therefore she did not die an ordinary death, as promised. And now remains in the Pureland Dewachen.

We pray for her swift rebirth; that she find Dharma quickly in that life. And lead others to liberation. I myself will look for her.
