Spaciousness

The following is an excerpt from a teaching by Jetsunma Ahkon Lhamo called “Antidoting the Mantra of Samsara”

According to the Buddha’s teachings, that goal isn’t very far away. It doesn’t even have to be created.  One doesn’t create enlightenment you see.  Enlightenment cannot be created.  The natural state cannot be brought closer or created or uncreated.  It simply is not within the realm of that kind of activity.  What must happen is we must purify or apply the antidote to certain conditioned responses that we are chronically and continually engaging in in order to develop a kind of spaciousness within our perception or our view, a kind of spaciousness within our mind by which we can truly awaken to the primordial wisdom nature.  So what has to be done is very deep.

People feel silly and show-offy today.  If you goof around it won’t much affect anything.  Enjoy yourself but don’t expect to change the world all by yourself.  What CAN change things today is the magnetic effect of groups.  People joining together for a common purpose are powerful and a force to be reckoned with!  You may feel as though you’re re-stating your position, but go ahead and do it anyway.  You’re going back over old ground, mining the same vein, and you can find a treasure you overlooked the first time around.  Sudden interactions with old friends are likely, and you see things in a new way.  In a different direction, men and leaders are gently, intuitively coming up with a winner of a plan.  Leave them alone to dream, they may be the ones to save you with their ideas! Merry Browne said, “Preconceived notions are the locks on the door to wisdom.”  Be open to brand new ideas.

Astrology

A last minute emotional situation pops up, and afterwards you move on to a firey path!  A burst of energy is cheering, and a combination of intuition, hard work and perseverance characterize the day.  Men are emotional and reflective, and women are ready to take on the world!  A surprising shift has occurred, and you may feel as though you’re acting out someone else’s part in a play. You don’t feel like yourself, but you’ve watched others so you know what to do.  A magnetic attraction floats in the environment, and if you feel strongly pulled to do or say something go for it! Samuel Butler said, “Inspiration is never genuine if it is known as inspiration at the time.  True inspiration always steals on a person, its importance not being fully recognized for some time.”  True inspiration is present.  Just don’t challenge authority.

Something draws to a conclusion today and a new mode begins.  Home and family are where the heart is.  It’s time to go back to your roots!  A backward pull exerts itself, and memories of past experiences and situations come to mind.  You can solve problems or use familial logic to handle matters successfully.  Intuitive awareness is powerful, so trust your gut!  An amusing interchange makes life fun.  It’s hard to be sad when you’re laughing.  Spend time with mechanical objects. Machines, gadgets and all sorts of newfangled things are helpful. Hurt feelings are still a danger.  Be really nice to children and vulnerable people, and if someone looks sad drop everything and offer comfort.  Not judgment.  Marion Bradley said, “Speak not against anyone whose burden you have not weighed yourself.”

Nothing much happens early in the day.  Conversations and decisions are inconclusive.  But a new beginning happens as the day progresses.  One way is abandoned and a new door opens.  A hunch or intuition can send you off in the right direction.  Do not discuss this observation with anyone else. Others will try to talk you out of your perception, but don’t let this happen.  You are right!  Trust yourself absolutely and move forward with what you know.  Tender feelings are present, and hurt can happen.  The other side has no clue and if challenged about a hurtful comment will try to debate you out of your feelings!  Back off; disappear, if you find yourself caught this way.  Elsewhere, a pleasant comment or a nice apology works wonders in a dicey situation.  Be a diplomat.  You won’t be sorry!  Abraham Lincoln said, “It has been my experience that folks who have no vices have very few virtues.”  We are all members of this club.

It’s hard to get going today.  A dream or perception may have enchanted you, or else you stayed up too late watching TV.  You are a bit befuddled, and straight thinking can elude you.  Double check information before you go to work.  You can misread directions and have to do it again.  An ebullient enthusiasm is present, and a strong urge to “get going” is mingled with confusion.  Again, be careful that you don’t “get going” in the wrong direction and have to turn around.  In a different direction, you’re happy and in a great frame of mind.  The mailman is your best friend, as well as anyone who delivers things.  Others have a magical ability to explain matters that confuse you. Listen!  Ask for advice and be willing to give advice to those who don’t know.  Will Rogers said, “Everybody is ignorant, only on different subjects.” This is a great day for learning!

The Teenager and Ethics

An excerpt from a teaching called Walk the Talk – Ethics by Jetsunma Ahkon Lhamo, June 8, 1994

How do ethics come about in our personal lives?  Study sociology and you can find out how ethics evolved in our society.  Study developmental psychology and you can find out how ethics developed within us as individuals.  I would like to focus on that a little bit so that we can relate to it as individuals.

How many of you remember something about your teenagerhood? If you remember much about your ‘teenagerhood’, and you if you ask your parents, they will agree with you; that was the time when you were most disgusting and obnoxious. Most parents will think that their teenagers really should be put to sleep when the hormones start raging and put in stasis and reawakened later on.  As a parent, I can certainly see the wisdom of that.

That’s one shining example. When you finally left your teenagerhood, did you look back at yourself and think, “My God, I was the most selfish creature that ever walked on the face of the earth.  I was completely selfish.”  No, because it is normal at that age.  When you are a teenager it is as though biologically, physically, and a little bit of your mental and emotional development has started to take on the image of an adult.  Your body is changing, your mind is changing, the heart is changing, everything is changing, but it is all in flux.  Your hormones are going crazy.  Your body does not look the same from one week to the next; it is doing things underneath you that you do not understand, and so you are not in total agreement with your body at all times.  Your emotions are raging.  You have found out about all the things that you can have in the world and the forbidden fruits are suddenly becoming more reachable.  You have just figured out that you can say no and you are big and tall enough now to get away with it.  You know how to walk away. You know how to run.  You can learn how to drive a car.  There are all kinds of power that you have that you did not have before.  But what you do not have as a teenager is the emotional maturity to deal with it.  You have all kinds of power and new things that you can do and a new body to do it with and none of it is under control. Basically, as a teenager, you are out of control.  Your mind is out of control.  You are not mindful.  You are not conscious of your environment.  You are not aware of what other people think or what other people feel.  You are simply absorbed in these raging developments that are happening in your body and in your mind.

What begins to happen as you move out of teenagerhood is that you go through a lot of pain.  Do you remember how painful your teenagerhood was?  It is an extremely painful time.  Once again you found out about all the things in samsara that you can have, but you also found out that you couldn’t have them all.  The minute you found out about sex you found out not everybody wants it with you.  And when most people do want it with you, you find out that there are definite drawbacks.  There are all kinds of things that happen.  Basically you are an older version of what happens in the terrible twos, when two year olds learn how to say no.  They did not know how to say that before, but at two, they can say no.  And it seems to have some effect on the world and they are giddy with the realization of this.  That is actually what happens to teenagers.  They are simply giddy with what they can get away with.  If they can get away with a lot, if the parents do not have the strength to control or help them or if the parents are out to lunch, the kids are down the road in destructionville, setting themselves on fire because they can say no, again.  That is the big realization that has come into their lives.  They can say no.  So, they are going to say no to everybody.

What happens as you begin to leave this really lousy age? Nobody is exempt.  I was very selfish as a teenager.  And I felt I knew it all, too.  I was supremely omniscient until the age of about 21 when I realized there were others that had thoughts as well.  That is just how it is when you are a teenager.  You know everything.  You have had your first rudimentary thinking process as your tiny little brain buds begin to develop a little growth, and so, at that point it is a big deal.  Then when you realize that other people are having complete thought processes, thinking in total equations, you realize were not doing that at all.  At that point, you are turning 20 or 21. This is not a joke. This is what happened to you.  Can you remember? You are just beginning to rise from the primordial ooze around the age of 20 or 21.

Often at that point, kids that are well raised and basically fundamentally secure, happy in their homes and have good communication with their family, look at their parents and say, “Ooh.  Sorry.” They really do.  They look at their parents and say, “Gee, I was a real jerk for five years.”  And the parent says, “Yes” and it is all made well.

That particular growth process is extremely important, because teenagerhood is filled with suffering.  Do you know what the suffering is about?  The suffering is less about raging hormones than we think.  It is actually more about the fact that these poor sentient beings do not have the capacity at that age, to have or hold to any kind of ethical system. They do not have the capacity really even to see or sense what other sentient beings are experiencing or to empathize sufficiently to be able to gauge their own behavior.  One of the things that happens at about 20 or 21 is that it actually dawns on the person that they have been hurting others.  They actually learn from hurting their parents.  Unfortunately, as parents, you have to understand that. If you have teenage children, one of the things that you have to commit to; that they are going to do as teenagers, is hurt you.  It is necessary.  It does not mean you let them get away with it, because if you do, you are both dead.  They are going to go down into self-destruct land and you are going to go down in to schmuckland, not able to ever relate to your child in a strong way.  You do not let them get away with it.  You have to have firm discipline.  Those of you who are parents who do not have firm discipline in your homes, will know about it now, because if your kids are old enough, they are already out of control and it was because you did not have firm discipline.  It’s really cute to be that way with your kids when they are younger, but when they are teenagers, they must have the habit of firm discipline or they will not be able to manage, and you will not be able to help them.  Because when they are teenagers, they are going to hurt you and if you are not in control, they are going to hurt you badly.  And it is what they need to do.  That does not make them bad people.  They are not different from you.  They simply have to do that to learn.  They have to learn by your response.  They are going to learn.  When they crumble, when they watch you cry for them, when they watch you come back at them with the same vengeance they came at you with, or whatever it takes.  They are like little computers, taking that in.  I mean, some of them are not little computers and they are still kids. If you can imagine they are almost like little creatures that are learning the size of the room they are in by throwing things against it, seeing how long it takes to bounce back.  It is not so different, again, from the baby in the highchair that we all know and love, who loves to drop his fork or his spoon or his food just to see how long it takes to get to the floor and how long it takes you to pick it up.  They need to do that.  It is about learning.

That is what teenagers do, and at that point, they come up with rudimentary ethics.  We learn ethics through our own pain.    As teenagers you learned ethics through seeing other people hurt.  You learned them through watching. What really happened was when you were a teenager, you got hurt; you got blistered by what you saw.  May not be when you were 21, it may have taken you a while longer, but at some point you decided it is not good when people hurt me.  But later that comes to mean I cannot hurt anybody either.  But it really starts right around that time of teenagerhood and it starts by watching how the world responds to what you’re dishing out.

Chatterbox day!  Everybody has something to say, and the trick is to find a willing listener. Popularity is guaranteed for the person who smiles and listens all day.  But you don’t want to! Happiness reigns, and satisfaction is here.  Friends appear, and new friends can arrive.  Be open.  Short distance travel is favored, and important communication is everywhere.  Home matters capture your attention.  With all the pleasant energy swirling about today, one area must be avoided: if you feel someone has been in power too long and must step aside, be very, very careful.  That person is stronger than you know.  Do not oppose authority figures: do not go against the “old guard” in any way.  Real danger is present.  If the police show up, it’s all “yes sir!” on your part, and all goes well.  Cato said, “He approaches nearest to the gods who knows how to be silent, even though he is in the right.”

Recognizing the Miraculous

The following post was contributed by Ani Kunzang Drolma:

Recognizing the Miraculous

Designed by the Buddha himself, Stupas are a display of enlightened mind in the world. Because of this they provide an opportunity for all beings to receive blessings by making offerings, circumambulating and taking care of them. These blessings occur whether we understand the nature of a Stupa or not; the seed of Buddahood or enlightened mind exists in all sentient beings and can be ripened by these blessings. It is like a call and response on an invisible, subtle level that can happen spontaneously without the process of ordinary, rational, thinking. A person who is not a Buddhist, perhaps not having any faith, may feel compelled to prostrate to a Stupa without comprehending why and may even be surprised at their own actions.  This is the miraculous nature of Bodhicitta, the compassionate wisdom nature of enlightened mind. In whatever shape or form it exists in the world – as a Stupa or as an enlightened pure Teacher – it constantly communicates with each of us, with that very same nature that exists within.

Recently at the Migyur Dorje Stupa in MD, which is currently being cleaned and repaired, a turtle walked up to the Stupa and laid a clutch of  eggs right in front. Normally a turtle would not go to an open public space to lay her eggs, but this turtle was responding to the presence of the extraordinary, the Stupa, and making an offering. This occurred while Jetsunma was engaged in prayer in her home on the Temple land. At about the same time the stillness of the air was transformed by a rising wind, as if the elements too were acknowledging the presence of  the sacred.

Some days later, cleaning and other upkeep was being undertaken at Jetsunma’s Long Life Stupa. A circular rainbow appeared around the Stupa, which could be seen from every angle. Those present knew they were witnessing the miraculous, and responded with devotion and joy.

In his extraordinary and lyrical book, “Magic Dance, The Display of the Self-Nature of the Five Wisdom Dakinis”, HE Thinley Norbu Rinpoche, who sadly recently passed from this world, speaks about miracles in the chapter on Personal and General Phenomena. Contemplating it helps unravel the confusion about miracles and the presence of enlightened mind in our world.

He says, “Until we become enlightened, personal and general phenomena communicate with each other. Because of this communication it is possible for the personal spiritual qualities of enlightened beings to become conspicuous through their history and to remain like echoes in the general spiritual system even though the source of their pure self-visible phenomena is invisible to us until enlightenment. For individuals as well as for groups, when the contributing circumstance, the sublime history of enlightened beings, joins with the root circumstance, our secrete essence enlightenment seed, the seed can awaken and grow. By the joining of these two circumstances, our spiritual qualities increase.

When we remember great sublime beings such as Milarepa, Jesus, Buddha Shakyamuni, and Padmasambhava, we think they performed miracles intentionally. Of course, it is good to feel this way because by trying to connect with their pure secret essence we accumulate merit. But the perception of this intention is only our general group phenomena agreement. Actually these miracles only appeared when sublime beings used the pure undivided secret essence of the elements, which exists from the beginning, in order to make truth conspicuous……The gross and subtle elements are always connected to their secret essence. People who saw Jesus walking on the water had a good karmic link with him, because with their gross and subtle elements’ phenomena, they could connect to the pure secret essence of what they perceived as a miracle.”

Pure enlightened mind is ever-present, whether we recognize it with our ordinary minds or not. As Rinpoche says, “the primordial secret essence of the elements, which is never divided, always vast, inseparable pervading everywhere.”  Miracles occur when, through the kindness of a pure Teacher, we glimpse the blessings of the primordial secret essence and know it to be extraordinary. This encourages us to increase our faith and devotion towards that which is truly holy. As we acknowledge and pay homage to the extraordinary nature of this essence in the form it has appeared in our lives – through our Teacher or Stupa or sacred statue – we move towards a state of recognition and the awakened state of enlightened mind, or Bodhicitta.

There is a beautiful prayer we say, to invoke the qualities of Bodhicitta:

“May all beings know happiness and the causes of happiness,
May they be free from suffering and the causes of suffering,
May they never be separated from the sacred happiness which is sorrowless,
And free from the knots of hope and fear may they believe in the equanimity of all that lives

Recognizing miraculous events reminds us that we are never separate from that sacred happiness. It is through our devotion and the immeasurable kindness of our Teacher that such opportunities arise. It is helpful to contemplate and rejoice in this so that we can better discriminate that which is sacred, and deepen in our recognition.

You’re satisfied.  A recent accomplishment or success sends you into the weekend with a feeling of “well done!”  You can have a true rest, as opposed to a worrisome “what’s next?” sort of rest.  Pleasant conversations and interactions with others magnetize you, and you’re full of enthusiasm for life.  A discussion gives insight about the past, and goodwill is in the air.  Emotions are rampant, and words trigger surprising responses.  You can say “thank you’ to a nice checker and watch that person burst into tears of gratitude.  If you’re the weepy one, relax.  People are more tolerant than you think.  Voltaire said, “We are all full of weakness and errors; let us all pardon each other our follies; it is the first law of nature.”  Nostalgia is everywhere.
