Caretaking the Gift

The following is an excerpt from a teaching by Jetsunma Ahkon Lhamo called “Commitment to the Path”

It is so important and so precious that we have this human existence. We should consider ourselves caretakers of that—that prize, that gift, that blessing—that it should not be taken lightly.

Sometimes we think, “Oh, you know, I would really like to live a life that is warm and fuzzy.  I don’t want to live a life where I have to know about all these bad things and apply antidotes all the time.  Oh gosh, that’s just so…  I’d rather be warm and fuzzy like a puppy.”  Well, all right, but I have puppies and I can tell you that I love my puppies so much I can’t explain it.  They are so adorable.  I love them so much.  They are so good for me.  I am so good for them.  I love my puppies.  They are like my kids.  However, my puppies cannot hear the Dharma.  They cannot look at me and say, “This is my teacher.” The devotion they feel is clearly based on food and scratching behind the ears and I hope it’s not the same for my students.  They cannot attain view.  They cannot recognize anything but the most minimal cause and effect relationships.  They know not to sit in an uncomfortable place if they’ve sat there before or they recognize something hot if they’ve seen it before, like that—the simplest associations—but they have no capacity for practice.

And yet, I have my students that say to me, “Oh, they are so lucky. They get to live with you all the time and go with you wherever you are and they sit on your lap.” No they’re not.  You don’t want to travel with me all the time, be with me all the time and sit on my lap.  What is that going to do?  How is that going to get you through life? And what are you going to do in the bardo?

So we have to understand that Buddhism is about really examining what is in front of us, seeing what is on our plate.  And although we may not be so glib and so cool and savvy with the positive remarks and the upbeat thinking, we will be savvy and smart and intelligent and able to change things that would seem to be impossible to change once we understand what the Buddha has taught.

A perfect square in cardinal signs encourages people to sit tight in terms of taking action.  Do something and it won’t quite work out as you wish. Emotional volatility is present, but because of its coldness you may not recognize it as a component of emotion.  If someone behaves gruffly or falls silent, check for hurt feelings.  The tendency is to think “that’s how he/she is” but don’t believe it. People behave like automatons today. What they’re doing is trying to follow the rules in order to avoid criticism or censure. What’s good today: emotional satisfaction that needs nothing more, artistic creativity, imagination and love?  Marcel Proust said, “Let us be grateful to people who make us happy; they’re the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.”

The mood turns serious today.  Observe protocol in everything you do. Stand when older people appear and shake everyone’s hand.  Dress conservatively.  It’s important to play your part to the best of your ability.  Shakespeare said, “All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players. And one man in his time plays many parts.” If you hold an important position, step up and own it!  Think of Queen Elizabeth or President Obama: each represents a nation.  Oddly, the more formally you behave the happier you’ll be.  Goof off and you’ll get into trouble.  What’s good?  Shopping, food and relaxation.

Good fortune comes early from a private source.  Somebody does you a favor and walks off, leaving you surprised and happy.  Pass it on to someone else when you get the chance. A message is uplifting and spirits are high.  Men and women are in sync and children are good natured.  It’s a favorable time to travel and expand your horizons.  When speaking with others be sure to explain the overarching philosophy behind your actions.  People want to know why you do what you do.  Tell them. (” I went to this store because they carry bio-degradable items.” “I called my mother because she just had surgery.” “I like morning better than evening because of the way the air smells.”)  BECAUSE is today’s best word. Wolfgang von Goethe said, “A correct answer is like an affectionate kiss.” Today that answer is “Because…”

An interesting conundrum is happening today.  You are under tremendous pressure and at the very same time under wonderful love aspects.  It’s all a question of where you put your attention.  Focus on inspirational matters, health issues and creative ventures and everything’s coming up roses! Focus on who is best, strongest or smartest and everything’s a mess.  George Foreman said, “There’s more to boxing than hitting.  There’s not getting hit, for instance.”  Don’t get hit today! Don’t even get in the ring. Spend time doing  things that make you happy.  Watch a movie, paint a picture, meditate, go for a swim.  All these things are great. Absolutely spend time with your loved ones.  If they’re not in the area, call them up and tell them how much they mean to you!  Love is wonderful.

Circumstances have a tendency to whip up emotions, to inflame the crowd today.  Don’t fall for it.  If you are faced with an upsetting situation do your best to relax, to move into a happy state.  This changes your life.  Two paths are open.  One is inflamatory and exciting.  Avoid this, it’s perilous. The other is relaxed, peaceful and natural.  Take this route and a million dangers are avoided.  Of course, the exciting one is hard to resist. Lyman Beecher said “Never chase a lie.  Let it alone and it will run itself to death.” Food and family continue to be wonderful.  Home is where it’s at.

When a negotiation comes today, and it will, listen to the quiet voice that offers a solution instead of an opinion.  Pay attention. Walter Lippman said, “It requires wisdom to understand wisdom; the music is nothing if the audience is deaf.” Everyone is making so much noise that you must be alert to hear what’s being said. The noisy issue involves who’s right.  What’s needed is a solution, and it’s here. Elsewhere, a wonderful alignment of water signs brings love, support and emotional stability.  Spend private time with those you love and the aggravating things won’t rattle you.

An early mode of indecision comes today.  Make no choices until it passes.  You will know the moment your thinking settles down and you are capable of solid thought.  A woman gives private advice that should be taken.  Do what she says and don’t run around telling everybody about it. An argumentative energy is about.  If it seems you’re being disagreed with constantly change tactics and state first the other person’s opinion and then yours.  Two sides are here and until you acknowledge both nothing happens.  Forget about “my way or the highway.”  Thomas Merton said, “The more you try to avoid suffering the more you suffer because smaller and more insignificant things begin to torture you in proportion to your fear of being hurt.”  Elsewhere, a relaxed, loving person is present who calms everything.  Follow this person.

Drakmar Tulku on Termas

On April 11th, 2014 Drakmar Tulku visited Jetsunma Ahon Lhamo in Dakini Valley, a retreat land in Arizona. While there Jetsunma showed him a naturally occurring Phurba she had found in a rock formation. This is the teaching Grudrag Khentrul Rinpoche offered to the students that were gathered there.
