The Sutra of the Heart of Transcendent Knowledge

The following is dedicated to the wonderful neighbor, an angel, who brought our Brenna back home to us:

Thus have I heard. Once the Blessed One was dwelling in Rajagria at Vulture Peak Mountain, together with a great gathering of the sangha of monks and a great gathering of the sangha of bodhisattvas. At that time, the Blessed One entered the samadhi that expresses the dharma called “profound illumination,” and at the same time noble Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva mahasattva, while practicing the profound prajnaparamita, saw in this way: he saw the five skandhas to be empty of nature.

Then, through the power of the Buddha, venerable Shariputra said to noble Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva mahasattva, “How should a son or daughter of noble family train, who wishes to practice the profound prajnaparamita?”

Addressed in this way, noble Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva mahasattva, said to venerable Shariputra, “O Shariputra, a son or daughter of noble family who wishes to practice the profound prajnaparamita should see in this way: seeing the five skandhas to be empty of nature. Form is emptiness; emptiness also is form. Emptiness is no other than form; form is no other than emptiness. In the same way, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness are emptiness. Thus, Shariputra, all dharmas are emptiness.

“There are no characteristics. There is no birth and no cessation. There is no impurity and no purity. There is no decrease and no increase. Therefore, Shariputra, in emptiness there is no form, no feeling, no perception, no formation, no consciousness; no eye, no ear, no nose, no tongue, no body, no mind; no appearance, no sound, no smell, no taste, no touch, no dharmas; no eye dhatu up to no mind dhatu; no dhatu of dharmas, no mind consciousness dhatu; no ignorance, no end of ignorance up to no old age and death, no end of old age and death; no suffering, no origin of suffering, no cessation of suffering, no path, no wisdom, no attainment, and no non-attainment. Therefore, Shariputra, since the bodhisattvas have no attainment, they abide by means of prajnaparamita.

“Since there is no obscuration of mind, there is no fear. They transcend falsity and attain complete nirvana. All the buddhas of the three times, by means of prajnaparamita, fully awaken to unsurpassable, true, complete enlightenment. Therefore, the great mantra of prajnaparamita, the mantra of great insight, the unsurpassed mantra, the unequaled mantra, the mantra that calms all suffering should be known as truth, since there is no deception. The prajnaparmita mantra is said in this way:

TADYATA    OM GATE GATE PARAGATE PARASAMGATE BODHI SVAHA

Thus, Shariputra, the bodhisattva mahasattva should train in the profound prajnaparamita.”

Then the Blessed One arose from that samadhi and praised noble Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva mahasattva, saying, “Good, good. O son of notble family; thus it is, O son of noble family; thus it is. One should practice the profound prajnaparamita just as you have taught and all the tathagatas will rejoice.”

When the Blessed One had said this, venerable Shariputra and noble Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva mahasattva, that whole assembly and the world with its gods, humans, asuras, and gandharvas rejoiced and praised the words of the Blessed One.

Lotsawa bhikshu Rinchen De translated this text into Tibetan with the Indian pandita Vimalamitra. It was edited by the great editor-lotsawas Gelo, Namkha, and others. This Tibetan text was copied from fresco in Gegye Chemaling at the glorious Samye vihara. It has been translated into English by the Nalanda Translation Committee, with reference to several Sanskrit editions.

The Power of Prayer

The following is from a series of tweets by Jetsunma Ahkon Lhamo:

Today I had the joy of hearing of a miracle.

A student woke up a few days ago unable to move left side of her body. Scan said she had a bran tumor the size of an orange. She prayed and did mantra constantly since, and sang the Seven Line Prayer during the biopsy. Today she woke up with 75 percent function returned. The tumor had shrunk to size of an acorn.

She gives credit to Chenrezic and Guru Rinpoche. She carries my photo and recites Seven Line Prayer and Mani Mantra loud and proud.

I say these are the Miracles of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.  She will come here to make offerings and prayers and therefore I have great confidence in her life. She must, now, live a noble life.

No doctor has seen this before and they were still diagnosing. But an orange is as big as it is and an acorn is little and shrinking. #Miracle

Dedication Prayer

By this effort, may all sentient beings be free of suffering.

May their minds be filled with the nectar of virtue.

In this way, may all causes resulting in suffering be extinguished,

And only the light of compassion shine throughout all realms.

The Power of Prayer: A Modern Miracle

The following post was submitted by Ani Pema Mallu, a veterinarian and student of Jetsunma Ahkon Lhamo:

About one week ago Kennedy was scooting on her rear so I checked her anal glands to see if they were full. I found a hard nodule mass at the left anal gland opening inside the rectum. I advised Jetsunma this would need excision and biopsy and could be a malignant tumor.

I had my associate, Dr. Kitty Raichura examine Kennedy for possible surgery. Dr. Raichura performed a rectal exam and confirmed the presence of a single rectal nodule near the left anal gland opening. She said this was beyond her expertise to perform the surgery and would need referral.

Yesterday, Dr. Peter Eeg anesthetized Kennedy in preparation for the surgery but when he did the rectal exam preop he found now three masses in a line near the left anal gland opening inside the rectum. He said this was beyond his level of surgical expertise and we need to wake her up and send her to a specialist for surgical excision.

I informed Jetsunma these masses may be malignant since they have spread from one to three so fast. I scheduled an appointment with Dr. David Salor, the chief of surgery at VCA Veterinary Referral Associates for the next day.

Jetsunma prayed for Kennedy throughout the night before surgery.

Kennedy went to VCA/VRA at 10 AM and Dr. Saylor anesthetized her in the afternoon for surgery. When he examined her rectally he at first didn’t find the what were obvious three masses and called Dr Eeg to confer with what he had observed. Further exam revealed three small nodules at the left anal gland opening but they were no longer mass like. Dr. Saylor filled the anal gland with a viscous antibiotic liquid and flushed the inner material out and one very hard concretion popped out and the nodule at the opening was gone the other two were still there. He flushed some more and two more hard concretions popped out and the other two nodules disappeared. No surgery was necessary. Kennedy was taken off anesthesia, recovered sent home.

This is truly a miracle story where Jetsunma’s prayers dissolved three possibly malignant tumors into three concretions overnight.

Living in Prayer

The following is from a series of tweets by Jetsunma Ahkon Lhamo:

Last night we made a special room, a healing prayer room with tons of prayer flags:

The room will be finished but able to open completely in good weather- it’s called a Lanai. So peaceful!

It’s like living in a prayer…

Or floating in a dream with every pore awake and laughing, yet at peace.

Surround yourself with prayer flags someday and see for yourself. When the prayer flags blow you are blessed and happy.

Prayer to Take Rebirth in Dewachen (Realm of Great Bliss)

The following prayer is from the Great Perfection Buddha in the Palm of the Hand: The Lama’s Oral Instructions Upon the Recitation and Visualization of the Preliminary Practices of Ngondro revealed by Terton Migyur Dorje

If the following prayer is recited daily with faith, it will assure an auspicious rebirth:

EH MA HO The wondrous Buddha Amitabha and

The Lord Avalokiteshvara to your right and

The Bodhisattva of power, Vajrapani, to your left,

Surrounded by a boundless retinue of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas,

Into the wondrous, immeasurably blissful

Pure Realm of Great Bliss (Dewachen),

May I, at the moment that I must transfer from this life,

Without any other births intervening,

Be reborn, to behold the face of Amitabha,

And through the force of this prayer I am making,

May the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions

Grant blessings to accomplish this prayer without interruption.

TA DYA THA PENTSA DRI YA AH WA BHO DHA NI SWAHA

Thus through this generation and completion stage meditation and mantra recitation, and

Whatever virtue I have and will accumulate in the three times,

May I enjoy a long life, without illness, and an increase of understanding and realization.

When the time comes to transfer from this life, by taking rebirth in the Realm of Great Bliss,

And seeing the precious face of Dharmakaya Buddha, Amitabha,

I shall obtain the ten stages, and from all the pure realms of the ten directions,

May I send forth manifestations to guide beings without exception!

Medicine Buddha Technique

1. Be relaxed and comfortable. Do the muscle relaxing technique.

2. Check for five emotions that will cause distractions:

  • Attachment
  • Anger
  • Resistance to change
  • Self importance
  • Envy

3. Decide what you want to accomplish, for yourself and for all sentient beings:

  • Physical problems
  • Psychological problems
  • Spiritual issues

4. Construct the type of Medicine Buddha you need, the Buddha you need, the Buddha holding a plant in the right hand and a bowl of nectar in the left. For physical problems, the plant symbolizes curative medicine, the bowl preventative medicine. For psychological or spiritual issues, they represent wisdom and compassion, respectively.

5. Visualize the Doctor, holding the symbols, four feet in front of you.

6. Visualize the problem: ask permission to activate the practice.

7. The Medicine Buddha receives healing power (white light) from all trained sentient beings. Rays of light beam from the Medicine Buddha’s heart to the crown of your head. Breathe in white light and breathe out the problem, three times.

8. When you are cleansed, gain confidence in your own healing ability; reduce your dependence on an external deity. You will feel a sense of accomplishment independent of an external deity; hold that feeling as long as possible. Recite the mantra:

TAYATHA OM BEKAZHAI
BEKAZHAI MAHA BEKAZHAI RADZA SAMUGHATAI SOHA
